Mirror Mobiles

Article Source

Elkeland, a Danish design studio created a series mirrored mobiles built from simple linear geometric shapes that reflect light within a space. They are designed to "interfere with the perception of space".

Materials of double-sided mirrored acrylic, brass sticks and beeswax-treated flax string are hand assembled into a small range of simple linear shapes, from ‘Halfmoons’ to ‘Ellipses’ and ‘Stairs’.

"Mirror mobiles provide a subtle play of light. With the particular composition of reflective materials, they suggest an altered perception on geometric shapes, space and surfaces." Elkeland founder/designer Ida Elke.

"I was interested in the way mirror interferes with the perception of space, particularly when it is in oblique angles."

While the Ellipse model is made up of only one shape, the Halfmoons and Stairs models come in two parts, and can be hung this mobile in several different ways due to the sliding intersection of the brass sticks.

Video Inspiration

Alexander Calder

-A short video on some of the works of Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder Born on August 22, 1898 was an American sculptor who was known for being the original designer of the hanging mobile. The mobile is a type of moving sculpture made with delicately balanced and proportioned suspended shapes that move in response to touch or air currents .Calder was at the forefront of mobile design, his work transitioned from sculpture to wind mechanism to open design without the intentions at the start. Smart designs like these enable us to manipulate and personalise to suit briefs, individual preferences and overall shape desired.

Fabduino

Today we began milling and assembling our fabduino. We started by milling the areas that we needed removed which worked perfectly, however when it came to drilling the holes and cutting the board out we had some trouble. What happened was we remebered to switch the drill peices out but when it came to setting up the cut we did'nt work from left to right. Instead we skipped a very important element of the setup which meant the cut used the same drill depth as the traces and did'nt cut all the way through. We then had to go back and change the settings to cut properly. When it came to setting up the Fabduino with all of it's components we had no trouble at all. This was because we had all of the components set up on a page with their names while also sticking down with double sided tape to stop them from blowing away. With a little bit of help from Fin in one of the other teams we had no problem getting all of the components down efficiently and quickly with all connections working perfectly!

Power switch light source

- Power switch / Light Concrete, organic glass, electronics (the simplest)

- This is an attempt to combine the power switch and lighting in a meaningful element of interior lighting. This light turns on and emerges (spring support) out of the wall by easily touching its cap. Turns off as well - click and close it. Diameter of the fixture may vary from 100-300mm, as well as height - 50-150mm. It can function in 150mm thick wall. The wall and the light is gorgeous and functional interior design element. Let’s say - at a cafe table at home orover the cabinet.
