Thinking about the meaningful lamp name

lampname I started by analyzing the meaning of our pattern. I have got harmony& new beginning as a key word in our patterns. After that I have looked into maori words that related to our lamp such as sustainable (related to untouched, pure nature), shine, light and then words related to makers movement such as design, making, meaning..

lampname and then I have connected various of words to make our lamp name. I’ve tried to make it fluent as possible. ‘mahi mo mahi’ ‘making for making’ relates to the aspect of makers movement and is the most refined name that I could come up with. Mahi actually means various things such as practise, make, accomplish, perform, do, to work. (If it is too long I could pull mo out and call it mahimahi which could mean ‘makingmaking’, ‘doingmaking’ ‘makingworking’)

Team roles and Week 4 timetable

timetable Here is our timetable for the final week: scheduled by Kate We are still figuring out how long our programming will take but we have planned everything to finish on Wednesday so that if anything happens and doesn’t work we still have chance to make our final model achieveable before Friday.

Team member Roles: As a team industrial designer, builder Fin took part in souldering& programming fabduino, researching& collecting materials, made initial sketches and making realistic ideas in order to make our model to work. Fin was interested in hands on duty and made many prototypes for to refine.

As a team Spacial designer, timekeeper, illustrator Kate took part in designing NZ motif patterns, creating lasercut files to make prototypes, CAD,blogger(documentation), prototype maker. Kate always tried to think in realistic ways in order to achieve sustainable and refined outcomes.

As a team visual communicator,Note taker, creative idea maker Minjoo took part in team Documentation she made refined sketches, photographed the process and was mostly interested in blogging. Minjoo was a team contactperson who made sure everything was up to date and filled in the gap if it wasn’t.

Like our team manifesto we always challenged ourselves to keep moving forward. When we were stuck we have done more researches and sketches in order to make a better result. As a team we are trying to work out how to make our model sustainable as possible but because it is an opensourced we wanted our model to be simple as well. Not because we don’t want to try, it is because we know following complicated model is hard for people who hasn’t done DIY before and to avoid people getting scared about designing. As designers we wanted to create sustainable, affordable, elegant light which many people could follow, have fun in making process and finally recreating what we have made into something else creative. I believe that is the whole point of the maker movement. ‘The maker movement is not about the ‘stuff’ we can make, it’s about the ‘meaning’ we can make.’ (quote by. Jay Silver)

Refining Idea and finalizing our idea

programming Thinking about the inner light design, the sketches that I have made can make our process complicated and fiddly. Therefore we thought if we stick Led strip light on the edge of the model we will get a nice shading and also we weren’t be able to see much of the ugly LED strip. Which actually makes sense because hallway light doesn’t normally stay in middle of the hallway but people push it onto the edge so the light doesn’t get in the way when walking past.

programming Today Fin has created the lid on illustrator to laser cut. programming programming Here is the lid that we have made. The middle part is hollow therefore we can have our sensors, fabduino sitting on the middle of the lid.

programming As a group we are thinking about how to call this lamp. Our patterns contains part of New Zealand’s nature therefore we want the name to be meaningful as well which could portray the beauty of New Zealand Aotearoa.

Thursday group meeting

programming programming Today Fin and Kate successfully programmed our Fabduino using macbook.

modelfix Kate made a ring and fixed the joints on illustrator in order to print out on our laser cutter so the ring could stay and fix the shape of our lamp. Now our lamp is in perfect cylinder shape.

purchase We have also purchased sensors from Jaycar

Our next step is to connect LED light and sensors onto our Fabduino.
